Steven Rainey from Radio Ulster's Arts Extra catches up with Rigsy to discuss some of their favourite new tracks.
Matua Trap – Cleave
Steven: “This isn’t something they’ve just thrown out… They have honed this, they have worked at it, this is exactly what they wanna sound like… And I’m very impressed by it.”
Gone All Year - Grey
Steven: “To my ears it sounds a bit more like latter period Take That, with different kind of vocals… If this gets it’s hook into an audience, it’s gonna be hard to unhook that. And I think that that’s a very interesting time for music here.”
Rigsy: “It’s kind of more like ELO than a lot of the pop acts… I’m a big fan. For a first track we can both agree we’re excited by this.”
The Wood Burning Savages – Boom
Steven: “This is a really good step for The Wood Burning Savages… It’s moody, it’s mean, there’s a bit of a snarl to this one.”
Dirty Words - Wake Up
Rigsy: “They sound like Alloy Mental to me, which is no bad thing.”
Steven:“The thing that struck me was the words, they were very well crafted… the music in that track very much plays around the vocal… There’s a bit of ‘Eye of the Tiger’ at the start.”
Mail Order Messiahs – New Stuff
Steven: “I like a bit of music that makes you stand up and pay attention… It’s smart, but it’s also kind of smart Aleck’y... I kinda like that. If Best Boy Grip ditched the piano and went full on smart Aleck, I think this is probably what it would sound a bit like.”
Rigsy: “The vocal… there’s kind of a weird subtle kind of eerie effect on it... it’s something very curious indeed.”
