VOICEOVER: We're lucky to live in a country with so much diversity. But what is 'diversity'?
CHILD 1: Diversity means when people are different from each other.
CHILD 2: A group with different types of people in it.
CHILD 3: Diversity is where people are from all sorts of different backgrounds and come from different cultures.
VOICEOVER: Diversity simply means a variety of differences that make us unique. People can be different in all kinds of ways. For example, I have brown skin and brown hair and my best friend has red hair and blue eyes.
You’ll never meet a person who is exactly the same as you in every way. People have different appearances and identities but we also have so many similarities, which make us all equal! And if you ask me, that’s definitely something to celebrate!
In what other ways can people be different or ‘diverse’?
CHILD 4: Their race, their gender.
CHILD 5: People’s culture, what they eat, how they dress, what they believe in and how they look.
CHILD 3: People can have different accents.
CHILD 2: What you like doing, who you love. You can also be different because of your religion.
CHILD 1: Or by if they have a disability or not.
CHILD 5: We can also have different families. Some people can two mums, two dads, just one mum, just one dad, step families and even carers, and many more.
VOICEOVER: Imagine how boring life would be if we were all the same! We can learn so many positive things from the differences we have.
Sometimes our differences might cause arguments or conflict, so having a better understanding of each other could help.
Our communities depend on people living peacefully and respectfully, so that everyone can feel they belong.
What are some of the ways that you have learnt about differences and diversity in people?
CHILD 5: In school, we’ve experienced lots of different cultures and see how people live in the different parts of the world.
CHILD 4: By going to parties, like Nigerian parties, or wearing Nigerian clothes.
CHILD 3: My school has visited lots of places of worship and we’ve also tried lots of different foods.
CHILD 1: I love halloumi cheese which is from Greece, I love Pizza which is from Italy.
CHILD 2: Because I have different friends from different religions, I like talking about it so I learn more and I like to listen to what they do in their culture and what’s different from what I believe.
VOICEOVER: Sometimes just getting to know someone new can be a brilliant way to celebrate our diversity.
