Kenneth MacAlpine, King of Pictland

Description

According to myth, Kenneth MacAlpine drove away the Vikings to become the first King of Scotland. However, Scotland at that time was not a single nation. Records only started referring to ‘Kings of Scotland’ 40 years after MacAlpine’s death.

Classroom Ideas

Could be used in the study of the birth of a united Scotland. Before watching the clip, you may want to ask students the following ‘Who was the first King of Scotland?’ to see whether or not they believe the myth and as a segway into teaching them about the findings discovered in the earliest records.
