Who is Lubaina Himid?

Lubaina Himid is a British artist. She was born in Zanzibar, Africa in 1954 and her family moved to the UK when she was four months old.

She paints, draws, makes prints and collages and is well-known for her installation art.

Himid's installations are often made of large cut-outs of people and things.

She often re-uses objects she finds and turns them into artworks. One piece of work called Five Conversations is made using five old doors that she found and painted on.

Himid often makes work about history and the experiences of black people in it. You can walk around the cut-outs and use your own ideas to imagine the story being told.

Lubaina Himid thought that there should be more work in galleries by people from all sorts of backgrounds and places. Himid has organised art shows for black and Asian artists.

Although she only lived in Zanzibar for a short time, her work is influenced by the nature found there.

Lubaina Himid's cut-out figures are painted on wood and are larger than life-size.

She studied theatre design at university and her installations are similar to theatre sets, with props and characters that can be moved around.

Lubaina's work is often inspired by events or stories from history. She creates art that shares the untold parts or perspectives of those times in history.

• Lubaina Himid made history at age 63, when she became the first black woman and the oldest artist to win the Turner Prize in 2017.
• Her mother was a textile designer so Lubaina grew up around lots of colour and pattern.
