Key facts about Lubaina Himid

Lubaina Himid is a British artist. She was born in Zanzibar, Africa in 1954 and her family moved to the UK when she was four months old.

She paints, draws, makes and and is well-known for her .

Himid's installations are often made of large cut-outs of people and things.

She often re-uses objects she finds and turns them into artworks. One piece of work called Five Conversations is made using five old doors that she found and painted on.

Himid often makes work about history and the experiences of black people in it. You can walk around the cut-outs and use your own ideas to imagine the story being told.

Lubaina Himid thought that there should be more work in galleries by people from all sorts of backgrounds and places. Himid has organised art shows for black and Asian artists.

Although she only lived in Zanzibar for a short time, her work is influenced by the nature found there.
