Fiction vs non-fiction
NARRATOR: We have two writers here.
Professor Wordsmart loves non-fiction, and Dr. Wandtastic loves fiction.
And we have a book that hasn’t been finished yet…
This is about how to fix a car engine. Dr. Wandtastic…
WANDTASTIC: Yes. Um… Fill the engine full of spaghetti and then carry it over the mountain to the land of purple tortoises…
NARRATOR: That’s not going to help anyone fix their car. You have a go, Wordsmart…
WORDSMART: Open the car’s bonnet to look at the engine…
NARRATOR: Much better. A non-fiction book is about facts, you can’t just make it up…
What about an adventure story?
In this one the hero has just jumped out of an aeroplane.
What happens next?
WORDSMART: If he jumps from an aeroplane he will hit the ground at 120 mph unless he has a parachute.
NARRATOR: Hmmmmm…
WANDTASTIC: He tumbled through the air. ‘This is it’, he thought, ‘I’m going to die’.
But just then Bazzgar the mighty alien fish lord swooped by in his spaceship…
NARRATOR: Yes! Much better! Fiction is all about imagination…
Description
Fiction is made up, you need to use your imagination when you are writing it. Types of fiction include plays, stories and poems.
There are many different types of non-fiction writing, such as newspapers, adverts, brochures, reference books and biographies.
A non-fiction book is about facts. You can’t just make it up.
