Speaker 1: Hiya, can I help you?
Speaker 2: Oh yes please I've got this £20.00 off voucher, I'd quite like these 4 canvases and I know you've got the 20% discount and I wondered if I could afford it?
Speaker 1: I'll take those to the counter and I'll work it out for you.
Speaker 2: Thanks ever so much.
Speaker 1: Thank you.
(TO AUDIENCE) These ones are £5.50 each.
To work out what they will cost with a percentage discount, first I'm going to need to work out how much 4 of them cost.
Next, work out what 20% off is and then subtract that from the original total cost of 4 of them.

Finding 20% of the total cost

Speaker: (TO AUDIENCE) Now I need to work out how much the customer will pay for her 4 discounted canvases.
The first thing I need to do is work out the total price of 4 canvases before the discount.
Because I'm timesing by 4 that's the same as doubling twice.
£5.50 times 2, or £5.50 plus £5.50, which is £11.00 and then doubling again.
£11.00 times 2, or £11.00 plus £11.00. That's £22.00.
Now I have my total, I need to work out what the 20% discount is and I better hurry up before she gets fed up of waiting.
I know whenever you are looking for 10% of an amount, that's the same as dividing by 10.
So you can easily do that just by moving the digits 1 place to the right of the decimal point and I don't need that 0 now either.
10% off would be £2.20 off, but the deal is 20% off.
So I need to double that £2.20, which is £4.40.
Now I have everything I need to work out the price of the canvas with the discount.
The original price for 4 of them was £22.00.
The discount is £4.40. £22.00 take away £4.40 is £17.60. Great. Let me go tell her.

Speaker 1: Hiya, so I have worked that out, you can afford it.
It's £17.60 with the discount so if there's anything else you like the look of you can get that.
Speaker 2: Brilliant, because this is £1.85, so I guess I'm cool for that.
Speaker 1: Great. I'll see you at the counter.
Here are the canvases and here is 55p change.
Speaker 2: That's great.
Speaker 1: Thank you, have a great day.
Speaker 2: Cheers, thanks very much.
Speaker 3: You alright there Jazz?
Speaker 1: Yeah I'm good. I just sold 4 of those canvases with a 20% discount.
Speaker 3: Oh yeah?
Speaker 1: It took a while because I did it all in my head.
Speaker 3: You can actually work it out on a calculator using this percentage button.
Speaker 1: Oh right.
Speaker 3: So what you do is, £5.50 times 4 is £22.00.
And then we find the percentage.
So, 22 times 20 and then the percentage button, 4.4, so £4.40.
Ok, so final part, 22 take away the £4.40 discount makes £17.60.
Speaker 1: Yeah that was faster, I'll use a calculator next time.
Speaker 3: Great stuff.
