Finding a half means finding one of two equal parts.
If you put two halves together you get one whole.
You can find a half of a shape, measure or a quantity.

Cutting shapes into half
You can cut a shape into two parts.
If you want to cut a shape into half, you must look very carefully, so when you cut the shape, you have two equal parts.

The two parts must be the same size and shape.
If you put the two halves back together you will get one whole.

✓True.
The two parts are unequal. That means that one part is bigger than the other.
The green part is bigger.

Example 2

Has this shape been cut into two equal parts?
✓Yes.
Yes, this shape has been cut into two equal parts.
The two parts are exactly the same shape and size.
You can put one part on top of the other to check.

Example 3

Can this shape be cut into two equal parts?
✓No.
This shape cannot be cut into two equal parts.
It doesn’t matter where you place the cut line the two parts will not be equal.
