
Finding a quarter of a shape
A quarter is when something has been split into four equal parts.
You can cut shapes into equal and unequal pieces.
Cutting something equally into two pieces creates 2 halves. Cutting the halves in two creates 4 quarters.
You can find a quarter of a shape, measure or a quantity.

Four equal parts
Cutting a shape into four equal parts creates quarters.
A quarter is 1 part out of 4 equal parts.
Here is a chocolate brownie. How could these children slice the brownie so they each get an equal piece?

There are four children, so they need to cut it into four pieces.
If they cut the brownie like this, they will each get an equal piece, or a quarter.

If the brownie has been cut equally then each of the pieces will be the same size.
Sometimes there are different ways you can split a shape into quarters.

However, if you put all 4 parts back together you will get the whole again.
