What is a 100 square?
A 100 square shows the numbers 1 to 100 on a grid.
Each row has 10 numbers on it. At the end of each row is a multiple of ten.

You can use the 100 square to count from 1 to 100 and to count from 100 to 1.
You can also use it to spot patterns in the numbers up to 100.

Counting using a 100 square
A 100 square can help you count numbers from 1 to 100.
If it's useful, you can move your finger along each square as you count up or down.

To count up in ones, you count on along the rows of the 100 square. Remember when you're counting on the 100 square, you do not count the number you start on. You start from the number next to it.

Example 1
Look at this 100 square.
It shows the number 38.

Can you work out which number is five more than 38?
✓ Count on from 38, starting with the number next to 38 on the grid. This number is 39.
39, 40, 41, 42, 43

43 is five more than 38.
When you move past 40, which is a multiple of ten, you need to move to the next row.
Example 2
Now, let's have a look at another example.
The number 89 is marked on this 100 square.

Can you work out which number is four tens less than 89?
✓ To count backwards in tens, you need to go up by one row for each group of ten on the 100 square.
79, 69, 59, 49
49 is four tens less than 89.

Example 3
Here is a 100 square with the numbers removed.

Which number is shown here?
✓ The number is 44.
There are four rows of ten coloured in and 4 more.
40 and 4 more is 44.
