Why do you need to count to 10?

Counting to 10 is a useful thing to do.

You can count things you see every day like stones, shells, counters and cubes.

Amir smiling and pointing to 2 rows of shells. Each row has 5 shells and numbers counting on from 1 to 10.

Songs and rhymes can help you practise counting on and back.

Knowing how to say the numbers in the correct order can help you work out how many of something you have.

Counting on and back

If you can count, you are able to say your numbers in the right order from smallest to largest, or largest to smallest.

Look at this pile of pebbles.

A pile of rocks

Counting them is easier if you move them into a line.

If you can’t move the things you are counting, you can point or touch them.

You can count and say how many there are in a set by remembering the last number you counted.

You can count on or back from any number and stop counting at any number too.
