Using minutes and seconds
It's important to be able to accurately measure time in seconds.
You also need to think about how you record time, if an activity takes longer than 60 seconds, or 1 minute.

You can count in 60s to work out how many seconds there are in each number of minutes.
For example:
| 1 minute | 60 seconds |
| 2 minutes | 120 seconds |
| 3 minutes | 180 seconds |
| 4 minutes | 240 seconds |
| 5 minutes | 300 seconds |
If you know these times, you can use them to break a duration into minutes and seconds.
For example, you could think of 65 seconds as 60 + 5 seconds, which is the same as 1 minute 5 seconds.
Or, 130 seconds as 120 + 10 seconds, which is the same as 2 minutes 10 seconds.
Example 1

How many seconds are there in 5 minutes, 37 seconds?
✓ You can work this out by counting up in lots of 60 seconds to represent whole minutes. Then add on the extra seconds.
60 + 60 + 60 + 60 + 60 = 300 seconds
300 + 37 = 337 seconds
Example 2

Two friends run a lap of a playing field.
It takes Sally 168 seconds to run all the way round. Maya runs round in 2 minutes, 58 seconds. Who was quickest?
✓ To work this out, you change Maya’s time into seconds. Then you can compare it with Sally's time.
Maya's time is 2 minutes 58 seconds.
Remember, 1 minute is 60 seconds, so 2 minutes is 120 seconds.
Then add 58 seconds.
120 + 58 = 178
Now you can compare them. Maya's time is 178 seconds and Sally's time is 168 seconds.
So, Sally was quickest, by 10 seconds.
