University and learning

Description

Getting into a good university is highly competitive, and entry depends not only on excellent grades but also good moral conduct. Graduating from a top university, such as Peking University, is a passport to success. However, while China’s education system provides a sturdy foundation, many students feel that Western education is stronger at building independence. In this clip, students say where they are from, introduce each other and talk about what they are studying.

Classroom Ideas

Place students in pairs. Students will watch the clip first and practise the question-and-answers game in Chinese following the same language structure as in the clip. A possible question could be, “where do you come from”, “ni chong na lai”, with answers such as “I come from Manchester”, “wo chong Manchester lai” or “I am a Londoner”, “wo shi London ren”.
