Computers and creativity

Computers have changed the way we do many things.
- They have made difficult and complicated tasks easier.
- They are able to store, organise and analyse large amounts of information.
- They can solve problems and make calculations faster than a human, all by following the instructions we gave them.
As well as being really good at helping us organise information and solve problems, computers can also help us to be creative.

Being creative means designing and making new things or combining things in new ways. We can be creative with words, pictures, videos, sounds and music.
We can use them to create new:
- stories
- art
- films and animations
- music
- games

Computers and computing devices can help us get better at creating things. They can allow us to make things faster, easier and be more efficientWorking in a way that gets results with less effort and time wasting.. They have also given us new exciting ways to be creative.
Computers can help us to make the things that we imagine come to life.
Stories and words

Books often contain thousands of words.
In the past, writers and authors wrote all their stories by hand, using pencils, pens and paper.
The invention of the typewriter made writing a little easier but writers still had to type stories out manually onto sheets of paper.

Today, authors and writers can use a computer to type their words onto a screen, where they can save, editChange, correct or add something new. and arrange them into a finished document.
This is called word processingUse a digital device to enter, edit and save text..
Authors can store draft documents in an onlineConnected to the internet. document folder and share them with editors. When the book is finished, they can send the digital text by email to the publishers to be printed on a digital printer.

Even with these digital tools available, many writers still choose to write some of their words using a pen and paper!
Animation and cartoons

Cartoon animations are films made using a series of drawings. The artists created their drawings using pencils, brushes, paint and paper.
Today, digital artistAn artist or designer that works with digital tools to create digital artworks and music. use digital pens to draw directly onto tablet touchscreens which act like digital paper.

They can use painting software tools to create images with unlimited colours and styles.
They can add layers and combine different images together to make new ones.
Plus you can rub out mistakes using a digital eraser!
Video and films

Making a film is a complicated process and it needs a team of people called a production team.
- The director organises the way the video footage is filmed.
- The camera operator is in charge of the camera.
- The sound operators record the sound.
- The wardrobe design and help the actors with costumes.
The team use a digital video camera to film the video clips. Once they have finished filming, they save the digital video files to a computer's memoryThe place in a computer where information is stored..

The film editors then use video editing programs to organise the film ClipA small section of video footage. into the finished film.
The editors can cut out any mistakes that the actors make, adding a soundtrack, titles and credits before exportSave and send a file out of an app or program so that it can be shared. the finished film.
Sound and music

Computers and digital devices can be used to both make digital music and record traditional instruments and songs.
Electronic keyboards and other digital instruments use computer processors to create sounds or audio. They can be programmed to imitate traditional instruments or to make completely original sounds.
We can use microphones and digital recording software to record pop groups and singers, orchestras and other musicians playing real instruments.

The recorded digital audio files can be stored online and shared with others. They can be edited using specialised music software and mixed with other sound files to create completely new material.
These digital recording tools and the internet mean complete songs and albums can be created with musicians and singers performing in different countries!
Watch: Being creative with computers
Find out more about being creative with computers with this film from BBC Bitesize for Teachers
NARRATION: Computers are brilliant at so many things. They are good at following instructions in a computer program to carry out complicated tasks. They are good at organising and storing data and information and solving number problems. They can do all these things more quickly and accurately than we can, so it’s no wonder that we rely on them so much during our everyday lives.
Computers and digital devices are also helping us to be creative in different ways. To make new kinds of art and music, to design games and share stories, to create, edit and share photos and videos. Computers can help us to make the things that we imagine come to life.
Think about all the books you have at school. Imagine if the author had to write each one out by hand. Authors will write a story on a computer to help them type in the words and edit and arrange them into a finished document. This is called word processing. Authors can then share these documents with editors, who can make changes using an online document folder, that means they can all see the work they are working on and the changes that are being made. When the book is finished the text will be sent, by email, to the publishers to be printed on a digital printer.
Have a look at these animations. The illustrator of these animations may have used a pencil and paper when they first drew their designs, but now they use digital drawing and painting tools and software to create the finished images. Digital pens can draw directly onto tablet touch screens, they act like digital paper. Using this special software for artwork means you can have unlimited colours and tools, and can add layers and combine different images together to make new ones. Plus you can rub out mistakes using an electric eraser.
Now we’re going to look a bit closer to home. When we make these films, yes the one I’m in right now, hello! We have a production team. A key role in this team is the director, who films the live action. They use a digital video camera to film the action. Once they have finished filming, they upload the digital video files to a computer storage drive and then use video editing programs to organise the film clips into the finished film. Any mistakes that the actors make can be cut out of the film to make sure it runs smoothly.
Did you notice the music and sound effects in the background of the film? They may have originally been performed on real instruments in a studio, but it will have been recorded onto a computer using a digital microphone and sound recording software. The editor will then have mixed the music and sound effect elements together into the background tracks you are listening to, using music editing and mixing software and powerful computers.
So, now we have written a book, designed and created an animation, shot a film and composed some music. I’m impressed!
There’s so much more to learn about being creative with computers. I feel inspired, do you? I might try my hand at writing a story, animating the characters and producing my own film! Coming soon to a cinema near you…
