Makeda wants to learn how to ask questions at work, but quickly learns that in German the words you use depend on who you're talking to!
Makeda: Rapper! How do I ask questions in German?
Rapper: Um, 'wer' is 'who', 'wie' is 'how', 'was' is 'what', 'warum' is 'why', and 'wann' is 'when'. Oh yeah! And 'du' is informal, and 'Sie' is formal, so Herr Özgur is a 'Sie' and I'm a 'du'. I'll send you a text.
Makeda: Danke! Was du hast da?
Rapper: Er… Brot! Makeda, don't forget, in German the verb is always the second word in the sentence, after the question word like wer, wie, was, warum or wann. So in this case it would be, was hast du da?
Makeda: So because the action is 'to have', I have to make sure have, 'haben', is the second word? So it's 'Was hast du da?', rather than 'Was du hast da?'
Rapper: Boom! Gut gemacht!
Makeda: Oh!
Marco: Hallo Makeda!
Makeda: Hallo! Wie heißt du nochmal?
Marco: Marco.
Makeda: Ah, ja. Wohnst du hier in der Nähe?
Marco: Ja! Und du?
Makeda: Ich wohne auch in der Nähe. Was machst du. I-I mean, was machen Sie hier?
Marco: Agh, Makeda. Wir sind doch Freunde. Du kannst mich dutzen.
Makeda: Dutzen?
Marco: We are friends, so you can say "du" to me. For example, when you're in a formal situation, and you talk to your teacher, then you have to say Sie. But when you're in a casual situation and you talk to your friends for example, then you can say "du." Dutzen.
Makeda: Agh, ok. Wo wohnst du und was machst du hier?
Marco: Ich wohne hier in der Nähe und ich esse gerade mein Mittagessen. Und du?
Makeda: Ich arbeite hier. Marco: Well in that case, ein Sprudelwasser und ein Kürbiskernbrötchen, bitte. Makeda: Herr Özgur, wo haben Sie ein Kürbiskernbrötchen?
Herr Özgur: Sie finden Kürbiskernbrötchen ganz links.
Makeda: Danke! Er, Marco…
Marco: Ja?
Makeda: Was machst du heute Abend?
Marco: Ich gehe trainieren.
Makeda: Wer kommt mit?
Marco: Ich gehe alleine.
Makeda: Wann gehst du?
Marco: Zirka um 18 Uhr. Ich übe den Spagat. I'm practising the splits.
Makeda: Wow! Wie machst du den Spagat?
Marco: Hmm…
Makeda: Ich mag auch lernen.
Rapper: Makeda kommst du?
Makeda: Ja!
Marco: Bis gleich, Makeda.
Rapper: Makeda, was mache ich nur?
Makeda: Makeda: Was ist das? Machst du Schwarzbrot?
Rapper: Nein
Herr Özgur: Was ist das?
Rapper: Er, Brot
