Rapper’s friend Marie visits, and while Rapper snoozes it’s up to Makeda to figure out how to talk about her past, present and future – as well as the future of her friends.
Marie: Rapper! Jonas sagt du hast eine englische Cousine zu Besuch! You have an English cousin to visit. Ist sie schon da?
Rapper: Sie ist schon da, ja.
Makeda: Hey!
Marie: Ahh! Hallo! I must meet you! I come by.
Makeda: When?
Marie: Ich bin Marie. Ich bin 16 Jahre alt. Ich bin eine Freundin vom Rapper. Und wer bist du?
Makeda: Errrr. Ich bin Marie.
Marie: Nein, du bist Makeda! Richtig?
Makeda: Oh! Ja, du bist Makeda.
Marie: Nein, du bist Makeda.
Makeda: Ja, du bist Makeda.
Rapper: In German, if you want to say anything you always have to match the person with their action, their verb. Mmm, it's just like in English! I am Rapper. You are Makeda. She is Marie.
Marie: Ja genau! Ich bin Marie. Du bist Makeda. Er ist Rapper.
Makeda: Ohhh, I think I get it! Ich bin Makeda.
Marie: Ja!
Makeda: Du bin Marie.
Marie: Nein. Oh Mann.
Rapper: Um, you only use 'bin' for 'ich'. Ummm. Ich bin. Ich bin. It's just like in English, you wouldn't say 'you am' or 'he are,' right?
Marie: 'Du bist', you are, and er, 'er ist' he is.
Makeda: Ooohhh.
Marie: Tee?
Rapper: Agh.
Marie: Makeda, ummm… Why came you to Berlin?
Makeda: For the music.
Marie: Ah, für die Musik!
Makeda: Uh, Rapper, wie sagt man… Ugh. Ich bin DJ in Berlin. Ich bin berühmt! Ugh… 'famous'.
Marie: Really? Already?
Makeda: No, no, no! Not now, um… in the future? You know? Die Zukunft.
Marie: Oooh. Not you are, 'du bist', but you will be, 'du wirst … sein'. Richtig? In German, like in English, we use different words in the past, present and future. So, in English you say 'will,' and in German we say 'werden.' Ich werde, du wirst, er wird.
Makeda: I will, you will, he will. Ich werde, du wirst, er wird. Ich werde DJ in Berlin…bin?
Marie: Naja! We have already said who is doing the action twice with 'ich' and with 'werde'. Just leave 'to be', or any other verb after 'werden' like you find it in the dictionary. So 'to be' stays as 'sein'.
Makeda: Werden plus sein, that future is fiiine! Ich werde DJ sein. Hammer! Du wirst DJ sein. Sie wird DJ sein. I will be. Und du?
Marie: Ich? Ich bin eine gute Geigerin. Ich werde eine Rock-Geigerin sein. Ja! Es wird so schön sein.
Makeda: Rapper, wake up!
Rapper: Makeda! I was sleeping!
Makeda: How do I say 'I am' in the past, like 'I was'?
Rapper: I was… I was having such beautiful dreams… Ich war.
Makeda: Rapper, hey!
Rapper: What?!
*Makeda: How do I say 'I was a good singer'?
Rapper: You were a good singer? Du warst eine gute Sängerin! Um. Du warst eine gute Sängerin. You were!
Makeda: Ich war eine gute Sängerin. Ich bin eine gute Sängerin. Ich werde immer eine gute Sängerin sein! I was, I am, I will always be a good singer… Frank!
Rapper: Hey! Ich bin Rapper! Ich war Rapper! Ich bin Rapper! Und ich werde immer Rapper sein! Anyway… Chill dich.
Makeda: That was a big meal! Das Essen war groß. I'm so full I'm going to explode. Ich war nicht immer satt, aber ich bin jetzt so satt, ich werde platzen.
Marie: Wow!
Rapper: Very good! Very good!
