Simplifying a fraction

Some fractions can be made 'simpler'.

This means that the numerator and denominator can be smaller numbers, but the overall value of the fraction is not changed.

For example, the fraction \(\frac{4}{8}\) has the same value as \(\frac{2}{4}\), which has the same value as \(\frac{1}{2}\).

When you are simplifying fractions, you are looking for a number that you can divide the numerator and the denominator by.

four eighths simplified to two quarters by dividing the numerator and denominator by 2. Then two quarters simplified to a half by dividing by 2 again.

Sometimes, you will be able to simplify a fraction into a unit fraction (a fraction with a numerator of one), but not always.
