Counting up and checking the day's takings

Speaker: So at the end of every day my manager will ask me to cash up the tills and print off a Z report.

This shows me that so far today we've taken £633.50.

£423.85 was taken via card. £209.65 was in cash.

I will leave £150 float in the till, which is what we start every day with.

£209.65 is what we should have in cash leftover when we take out the £150 float.

Speaker: What I'm going to do now is count and cash up the till.

So what I will do is start off by counting the coins.

So I'll use the pennies. I'll cash up all the pennies.

So I have 53p of 1ps. Then I'll move on to the 2ps, 51 2ps is £1.02.

54 5ps is £2.70. 21 10ps is £2.10 and 14 20ps means I have £2.80.

50p, £1, £1.50. And finally one pounds. £1, £2, £3, £4.

OK, now what I'll do is I'll count all of them up to give me how much I have in the change.

Which is £14.65.

Speaker: So I have a total of £14.65 but I'll round that down to the nearest £5, which means I'll subtract £4.65. £4.60… £4.65, there.

So the reason why I round down to the nearest £5 is to keep as much change in the float for tomorrow and it makes it easier to count to £150 with the notes.

So that means I have £10 left in change. So when I need £150 float I'll minus the £10 from the £150 to leave me £140.

So I should have £140, in cash, in the till.

So I'll make sure I have an even spread and as I have one £5, I'll exclude that from my takings.

So I will have £10, £20, £30.

£50, £70, £90, £110, £130, £150.

I'll put that back in. So now once I have the £150 in notes and change what I should have here in cash should be the total of £209.65 and I'll quickly count that now.

£20, £40, £60, £80, £100, £20, £40, £60, £80, £200.

£205… £206… £207… £208… £209… £209.65. So I have £209.65, which is exactly what we've taken for today so it's spot on.
