Adjectives and adverbs

Adjectives must agree with the noun in gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural). Make most adjectives agree with the nouns by adding 'e', 's' or 'es'.

Adjectives can go before or after a noun in French. Some adjectives change their meaning, depending on whether they are before or after the noun.

Comparatives and superlatives compare nouns. Adjectives in comparative sentences must agree with the first noun that is being compared.

Possessive adjectives show whom something or someone belongs to. French possessive adjectives must agree with the noun in number and gender.

Demonstrative adjectives in French are 'ce', 'cet', 'cette' and 'ces', meaning 'this', 'that', 'these', and 'those' in English.

Interrogative adjectives in French are words for ‘which' and 'what'. Interrogative adjectives change depending on the gender and number of the noun.

Indefinite adjectives are used to describe a noun in a vague, or non-specific, sense. 'Chaque', 'plusieurs', 'quelque' and 'tout' are examples of invariable indefinite adjectives.

Adverbs describe or modify verbs and adjectives, giving more information about where, when or how something is done.

Use comparatives with adverbs to describe how someone or something does an action ‘more or less … than’ or ‘as … as’ someone or something else.

Interrogative adverbs are 'question words', such as what, when and why. Questions can be formed in three different ways in French.
