Using prefixes and suffixes

Adding prefixes and suffixes to French words can change their meaning to create opposites, adjectives or nouns.

Ordinal numbers, such as second, third and twentieth, are formed in French by adding '-ième' to the cardinal number. The word 'premier', meaning 'first', is irregular.
