What is perimeter?

The perimeter is the distance around the outside of a 2D shape.
The distance can be measured in units like millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres.
To work out the perimeter, add up the lengths of all the sides.

Calculating the perimeter of a 2D shape
Omi has measured each side of this window.
Let's help her calculate the perimeter.

To calculate the perimeter of a shape, like this window, you can add the length of all the sides together.
100cm + 120cm + 100cm +120cm = 440cm
Or, you can multiply the length and width by 2. You can also think about this as doubling.
100cm × 2 = 200cm
120cm × 2 = 240cm
You then add both answers together.
200cm + 240cm = 440cm
So the perimeter of the window is 440cm.
Example 1

What is the perimeter of this rectangle?
✓32m
The simplest way to work out the perimeter of a 2D shape, is to add the length of all the sides together.
4m + 12m + 4m + 12m = 32m
Example 2

What is the perimeter of this square?
✓68cm
A square has 4 equal sides, which means the length of each side is the same.
One of the sides has a measurement of 17cm, so you can say that all the sides are 17cm.

You can solve this problem by using repeated addition:
17cm + 17cm + 17cm + 17cm = 68cm
Or by multiplying 17cm by the number of sides.
17cm × 4 = 68cm
Example 3

What is the perimeter of this rectangle?
✓98cm
A rectangle has two long sides and two short sides.

The longest side of this rectangle is 35cm, so you know that there are two sides with a measurement of 35cm.
35cm × 2 = 70cm
The shortest side of this rectangle is 14cm, so you know that there are two sides with a measurement of 14cm.
14cm × 2 = 28cm
Add both answers together for the perimeter.
70cm + 28cm = 98cm
