Surface area and volume
Description
Sarah and Robbie are out of their depth when trying to buy a new tank for their terrapins. How can they find out if the new tank has the same volume as the old one? Fortunately, Maths Crimes Detective Al Gebra, steps in and shows them how to check that the new tank, which is a triangular prism, holds the same volume as the old rectangular one.
Classroom Ideas
Applying the formula area of uniform cross-section × height to calculate the volume of various prisms, varying the units of the measurements/dimensions. Extending to finding how many litres of water they can hold and even finding how long it takes to fill a swimming pool if its measurements/dimensions and the rate of flow of the water are known.
