Measuring capacity

Capacity is a measure of how much something can hold in total.
Capacity can be measured using different units. It can be measured in litres (l) and millilitres (ml).
If you look at what units you are measuring in, you can work out capacity in that unit.

Understanding capacity
Volume and capacity are not the same thing.
Volume is a measure of how much liquid there is in a container.
Capacity is how much liquid a container can hold.

You can measure capacity in litres and millilitres.
There are 1,000 millilitres in a litre.
So 0.5 litres is the same as 500ml and 0.1 litres is the same as 100ml.
Sometimes capacity is expressed in millilitres only (eg 1,200ml).
Sometimes it is expressed in both millilitres and litres (eg 1 litres, 200 millilitres).
Sometimes it is expressed in only litres (eg 1.2 litres).
Example 1

This jug is half full with 2 litres of water.
How much water could this jug hold?
✓ The jug has a capacity of 4 litres. So it can hold a total of 4 litres of water.

Example 2

Can you fit all of the juice from these cartons in the glass?
✓ Yes, all the juice will fit in the glass.
One carton has a capacity of 0.7 litres which means that it can hold 700ml.
The other carton has a capacity of 0.8 litres which means that it can hold 800ml.
The combined capacity of the two cartons is 700ml + 800ml = 1,500ml
The glass has a capacity of 1,500ml so the juice will fit in the glass.

Example 3

Is there enough water in the jug to fill both glasses to the top?
✓ Yes, the full jug of water jug has a capacity of 0.9 litres or 900ml.
Each of these glasses has a capacity of 400ml or 0.4l.
Together the capacity of the glasses is 0.8l or 800ml.
This is less than the capacity of the jug, so we will also have 100 ml of water left over after filling both glasses.
