Capacity is a measure of how much something can hold in total.

Capacity can be measured using different units. It can be measured in litres (l) and millilitres (ml).

If you look at what units you are measuring in, you can work out capacity in that unit.

Understanding capacity

Volume and capacity are not the same thing.

  • Volume is a measure of how much liquid there is in a container.

  • Capacity is how much liquid a container can hold.

A jug with a capacity of 1.2 litres. It is filled up to the 700ml mark with juice.

You can measure capacity in litres and millilitres.

There are 1,000 millilitres in a litre.

So 0.5 litres is the same as 500ml and 0.1 litres is the same as 100ml.

Sometimes capacity is expressed in millilitres only (eg 1,200ml).

Sometimes it is expressed in both millilitres and litres (eg 1 litres, 200 millilitres).

Sometimes it is expressed in only litres (eg 1.2 litres).

Example 1

A jug is filled to the 2 litre mark with water. The maximum mark on the jug is 4 litres.

This jug is half full with 2 litres of water.

How much water could this jug hold?

Example 2

Two bottles of juice. One has a capacity of 0.7 litres, the second has the capacity of 0.8 litres. Next to this is an empty glass with the capacity of 1,500 millilitres.

Can you fit all of the juice from these cartons in the glass?

Example 3

A jug with the capacity of 0.9 litres filled with water. Next to this are two empty glasses, both with the capacity of 400 millilitres.

Is there enough water in the jug to fill both glasses to the top?
