Joining in
Sometimes it can seem hard to join in with a game.
Watch how Patrick joins Kim and Beth in their spaceship game.
We’re in a school playground. Kim and Beth are playing spaceships. They’re engrossed in the game, running around acting out scenes, pretending to be space ships with their arms out wide. Patrick is sitting on a nearby step watching them play. He looks sad and lonely. Jeanie sits down beside him.
JEANIE: What’s wrong Patrick? Is everything OK?
PATRICK: My friends are playing together and I want to join in.
Patrick puts his head in his hands as he speaks, looking very sad.
JEANIE: Well why don’t you go over and join in too? I’m sure they’d love for you to play with them!
PATRICK: They’re playing a spaceship game and I don’t know anything about that. They’ll laugh at me.
JEANIE: Why don’t you go and ask them something about their game, I’m sure they’d be happy to tell you?
PATRICK: Ok… Maybe I could ask them what their favourite type of spaceship is?
JEANIE: That’s a great idea Patrick!
Patrick walks over sheepishly.
PATRICK: H… hi guys. Can I play with you?
Beth and Kim look at each other, there’s a brief moment where we think they’re going to say ’no’ before they immediately turn around excitedly and in sync say;
BETH/KIM: Yes!
PATRICK: What type of spaceship are you?
KIM: Well I’m an alien ship and Beth is a rocket ship. We’re both landing on the moon! What type would you like to be?
PATRICK: Cooool! Uhh… I want to be… A transforming one!
KIM: A transforming one, what’s that?
PATRICK: Well, it’s one that can make different shapes so I can change between big and small!
BETH/KIM: Coooool!
The kids run off playing together with their arms spread wide, ’flying’ around the playground. Jeanie smiles and walks back inside.
