The Approximate History of Probability
Description
Praxis the robot and Alan the “human man” look at the history of mathematical probability. They meet Galileo, whose work with dice brings him under the suspicion of some rather violent inquisitors. Jacob Bernoulli explains his concept of the law of large numbers.
Classroom Ideas
Students could do a coin-flip experiment, keeping a record of the outcome of 100 flips. Then they could work out the relative frequency of outcomes. Then they could repeat the experiment with two coins simultaneously. A dice, or pair of dice, could be used to advance the complexity of probability equations.
