Immigration to the USA
Description
Illegal immigrants attempting to cross to the USA from Mexico face a number of barriers. Those who attempt the crossing are looking for better paid jobs and a higher quality of living. Education, better housing, welfare payments and safe political participation also draw people to the USA.
Classroom Ideas
This clip could be used to illustrate immigration issues in the USA. Following this clip, students could be asked to consider the factors which contribute to immigration, particularly illegal immigration. They could work in groups to compile two lists: push factors and pull factors. Students could then be asked to undertake the following creative writing exercise: Imagine you were a Mexican, why would you want to leave for the US, plan your illegal crossing, describe what happened, where are you now – doing what?
