Grammar - How to ask questions in French

There are several ways to form questions in French.

Asking 'yes' or 'no' questions

When asking questions to which the answer is ‘yes’ or ‘no’, use one of the following ways:

  1. Keep the word order the same as a statement, and add a question mark. When asking a question when speaking, you need to change the intonation of your voice to have a questioning tone.

For example:

Tu aimes lire des blogs? – You like reading blogs?

Vous allez regarder le match ce soir? – You going to watch the match this evening?

  1. Add Est-ce que to the start of the question and keep the word order the same as a statement.
Est-ce que + subject + verb + ?

For example:

Est-ce que vous avez vu sa vidéo? – Have you seen her video?

Est-ce qu’on va regarder le concours? – Are we going to go to watch the competition?

  1. Switch the verb and the subject at the start of the question. Remember to add a hyphen between the verb and the subject pronoun when writing. If the verb ends with a vowel and the subject pronoun starts with a vowel (il, elle or on), add -t- between them.

For example:

Suivez-vous des influenceurs? – Do you follow any influencers?

A-t-il un acteur préféré? – Does he have a favourite actor?

Forming questions with question words

The most useful question words in French are:

who … ?
/what … ?
when … ?
where … ?
why … ?
because … ?
how … ?
how much/how many … ?
how long … ?

Put the question word at the start of the sentence and switch the verb and subject around.

For example:

Où habites-tu? – Where do you live?

Or use est-ce que between the question word and the subject.

For example:

Où est-ce que tu habites? – Where do you live?

In spoken and informal French, most question words can also go at the end.

For example:

Tu habites où? – Where do you live?

Sœur (sister) is feminine and singular, so bavarde needs to end in e.
