What are miracles?
Simon and Sarah learn about some of the miracles Jesus performed
SARAH: Ugh! Sorry I'm late. Coulda used one of them miracles.
SARAH: Traffic everywhere. A wee parting of the cars trick, eh? Didn't Jesus do that kind of thing to help people?
SARAH: You know the one—he’s like ‘Wind, chill out.’ ‘Sea, get out of the way’?
SIMON: Right, you’re definitely getting mixed up. Let me tell you about the miracles in the Bible.
SARAH: Actually, I'm just winding up.
SARAH: I actually know loads about the miracles in the Bible.
SARAH: Well, a miracle is an extraordinary event caused by something supernatural. There are four types of miracles: healing miracles, nature miracles, exorcisms, and good old resurrections—all recorded in the Gospels.
SIMON: Eh, correct. So an example of a healing…
SARAH: Healing miracle would be…
SARAH: Healing Peter's mother-in-law or cleansing a man with leprosy.
SIMON: Definitely paraphrasing that.
SARAH: My favourite nature miracle is in Luke 8 when Jesus was sleeping on a boat while his disciples were panicking, saying, “Hey, there's a storm,” and he woke up and was all like, “Chill out, waves.”
SIMON: Again, paraphrasing. Please, listeners—go and look that up for yourselves.
SARAH: Also, walking on water is class.
SIMON: To be fair, everything you're saying is spot on. I just hope you describe it more seriously in your exam.
SARAH: Boring! Next is exorcisms.
SARAH: When he helped that wee boy in Mark, Matthew, and Luke or…
SIMON: Okay, we get the picture.
SARAH: Let me just finish.
SARAH: Resurrections are last. Raising people from the dead like Jesus' resurrection…
SIMON: Hey, where'd he go?!
SARAH: …or raising Lazarus? That really gave people faith that he was the Son of God.
SIMON: You know, I'm rather impressed. You've certainly done your homework.
SARAH: Actually, it's all written on that big whiteboard behind you.
SIMON: How did I not figure all that out? I literally wrote that an hour ago.
A miracle is an extraordinary event caused by something supernatural.
In the Bible, Jesus is recorded as performing four types of miracles in the Gospels:
healing miracles
exorcisms
nature miracles
resurrection miracles
Christians believe that Jesus performed miracles for several reasons:
God was at work in the world;
He was like the Old Testament prophets who also did miracles;
God loves and provides for people;
God has supernatural power;
He had compassion for people on the fringes of society - not only in his words, but also through his actions.
Examples of miracles
Do miracles happen today?

Many people reject the idea of miracles today based on scientific reasoning. They say that the laws of nature are fixed and, therefore, people do not rise from the dead, walk on water or create huge amounts of food from a few loaves and fish.
Christians respond by saying that God is the creator of the world and is not subject to the rules that humans face because He is outside the world.
Some object to miracles from a historical perspective arguing that miracles do not happen now so they cannot have happened in the past.
However, Christians would argue that there are multiple accounts of miracles happening in the present. The Church often investigates and confirms events which people claim to be miraculous and there are things which happen in the world today which cannot be explained by science.
The philosopher David Hume made several objections to miracles having ever occurred. In particular, he said that miracles were claimed in the past by ignorant and uncivilised people and, therefore, miracles cannot be believed.
However, this fails to recognise that many ancient civilisations were extremely clever and sophisticated.
Many of our modern mathematical and scientific concepts find their origins in ancient civilisations who would not be fooled by pretend or false “miracles.”
Ultimately, for people of faith they recognise that miracles are a matter of personal belief. Everyone must decide for themselves if miracles do or do not happen.
