First, then, now addition stories
You can think of a number sentence a bit like a little story.
You can use first, then, now to add numbers together and understand their connection to each other.
Let's look at an example.

What happened 'first'?
'First' there were 2 blocks.
'Then' what happened?
'Then' you add 1 more.
How many are there 'now'?
'Now' there are 3 blocks altogether.
Look at the number sentence that goes with this story.
2 + 1 = 3

First, then, now
You can use 'First, then, now' to help you understand addition.
'First' tells you how many things you have to begin with.
'Then' tells you how many are added.
'Now' tells you how many there are altogether.

- 'First' there were 6 blocks.
- 'Then' you add 3 blocks.
- 'Now there are 9 blocks.
This can be written as a number sentence like this:
6 + 3 = 9
Example 1
A baker is baking some bread.

- 'First' there are 5 loaves of bread.
- 'Then' the baker bakes 2 more.
Can you work out how many loaves there are 'now'?
✓ There are 7 loaves of bread altogether.
Here is the number sentence for this story.
5 + 2 = 7

Example 2
Let's use 'first, then, now' to work out how many are added.

- 'First' there were 3 children in the classroom.
- 'Then' some more come in.
- 'Now' there are 7 children in the room.
How many children came into the classroom?
✓ You need to work out what number is added to 3 to make 5.
You could count on from 3 to 5 to find the answer.
3 + 2 = 5
So you know 2 more children came into the classroom.

Example 3
Here are some caterpillars on a leaf.

- 'First' there are 5 caterpillars on a leaf.
- 'Then' 3 more join them.
- 'Now' there are 8 caterpillars on the leaf.
Which of these two number sentences shows this story?
3 + 5 = 8
5 + 3 = 8
✓ 'First' there are 5. 'Then' 3 more join. 'Now' there are 8.
So the correct number sentence is:
5 + 3 = 8

Did you notice the answer is the same for both addition calculations?
Remember, with addition, it doesn't matter which order you add the numbers together, the answer will be the same.
