One more and one less within 100

Part ofMathsAdding and subtractingYear 1

One more and one less

When you find one more, you add one or count on 1.

For example, ‘one more’ than 5 is 6.

Five teddy bears in a line with another bear added. Totalling 6

When you find one less, you take one away or count back 1.

For example, ‘one less’ than 5 is 4.

5 teddy bears in a line with one removed. Making 4

Finding one more

Let’s start by finding one more.

Charlie has 14 strawberries. Fatima gives him 1 more. How many strawberries does Charlie have?

two characters sharing a bowl of strawberries

Let’s use a tens frame to help us.

First let's put Charlie's 14 strawberries into the tens frames.

14 strawberries inside two tens frame. One contains 10 and the other contains 4.

You can see there are 10 strawberries in one frame and 4 strawberries in the other.

Fatima gives Charlie 1 more strawberry. So let's add that to the tens frame.

A single strawberry added to the tens frame. this now shows a total of 15 strawberries

You can see that Charlie now has 15 strawberries altogether.

You can write this as a calculation like this:

14 + 1 = 15

So, one more than 14 is 15.

Finding one less

Let's look at another question.

Betty has 23 bananas. She eats 1 of the bananas. How many bananas are left?

First, let's put the 23 bananas that Betty has into some tens frames.

23 bananas in tens frames. Two full frames and then one containing 3

Betty eats one of the bananas. So let's take one away from the tens frame.

22 bananas left in the tens frame

Let’s count how many bananas Betty has left.

Betty has 22 bananas left.

You can also write it like this:

23 – 1 = 22

So, one less than 23 is 22.

Using a hundred square

A hundred square shows the numbers 1 to 100 on a grid. Each row has 10 numbers on it.

Let’s use a hundred square to help us find one more and one less than 36.

First, let’s find the number 36 on the hundred square.

36 has 3 tens and 6 ones.

To find one more than 36 you look at the number after 36. One more also means the number after.

The number after 36 is 37.

36 + 1 = 37

One more than 36 is 37.

Now let’s find one less than 36.

One less than 36 is the number before 36. One less means the number before.

35 represented as the number before 36 on a 100 square

The number before 36 is 35.

36 - 1 = 35

One less than 36 is 35.
