River processes – WJEC Deposition

Moving from the upper course of a river to the lower course effects the rates of erosion, transportation and deposition change. This results in the development of large and small scale landforms.

Deposition

When the river loses energy, it drops any of the material it has been carrying. This is known as deposition.

Factors leading to deposition:

  • shallow water
  • at the end of the river’s journey, at the river’s
  • when the volume of the water decreases
