Other uses of à
À + a sport
À can be used with jouer to mean 'to play a sport'.
Most sports are masculine (le tennis/le foot etc). Therefore à + le tennis becomes au tennis.
je joue au ping pong - I play table tennis
il jouait au foot - He used to play football
À + time
À can be used to mean ‘at’ when telling the time:
à cinq heures - at five
à minuit/à midi - at midnight/at midday
à dix heures et quart - at quarter past ten
It can be combined with jusqu’à to mean until:
il travaille jusqu’à sept heures - he’s working until seven tonight
je suis resté jusqu’à la fin du film - I stayed until the end of the film
