The Climate Movement

The climate movement refers to groups of people engaged in direct action related to climate change. Many social media campaigns are running to encourage people to take a stance and pressurise governments across the world into doing more for the environment.

In recent years, teenager Greta Thunberg has led the worldwide campaign Fridays for Future to protest against the lack of action on what activists have termed ‘the climate crisis’.

The 2021 Show you Stripes campaign is being backed by UN Climate Change and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This campaign is striving for a strong outcome from the UN Climate Change Conference COP26 in Glasgow in October 2021.

This diagram from Show Your Stripes shows how the average temperature of the Earth has changed between 1850 and 2020. The blue colour represents colder than average years, while the red shows the opposite. The trends in recent years show much warmer temperatures.

Whatever the outcome of the COP26 conference, it is clear that direct action is needed now to prevent irreparable damage to our Earth.
