ElectromagnetismUses of electromagnets

Magnetism can cause forces to act without any contact. By understanding how permanent magnets and electromagnets work, we can describe and explain their uses in the world around us.

Uses of electromagnets

Electromagnets have the following uses:

  • A soft iron core is useful when you want an electromagnet to switch off rapidly.
  • Some cranes use electromagnets to pick up scrap cars. They can let go of the car by turning off the current.
  • Electric bells use electromagnets. When the electromagnet has pulled the striker towards the gong, the current stops to let the striker move back away from the gong again. The current restarts and the movement of the striker continues. The is constantly made and broken.
  • Electrically operated switches called relays also use electromagnets.

Electric bell

Many objects around you contain electromagnets. They are found in electric motors and loudspeakers. Electric bells like the ones used in most schools also contain an electromagnet. The slideshow describes how an electric bell works.
