Utility software - including data recovery

Disk partition editors

These are used to split a hard disk drive into different parts that each has a different function, such as running an operating system or storing backups. Disk partitioners are a way of organising a hard disk drive.

Archivers

Archivers use compression to reduce files to a smaller size, such as by “zipping”. This allows large files to be sent or shared easily. Archivers also group all the files together, as in a zip file, so that all related files are sent together.

Cryptographic utilities

These are used to keep sensitive information safe. They use encryption which scrambles data and prevents anyone else reading the data unless they have a password or key.

Data recovery

Data recovery software can be used if data has been deleted by accident. The software searches a hard drive or storage devices for any files that were lost or deleted. It works by scanning the disk and is useful in cases of accidental file deletion or disk drive failure.

Revision control

This is a type of system that keeps track of changes made to documents or files. If a user makes any mistake they can go back to a previous version. Revision control allows for an accurate record of version changes to documents and files to be kept by network or project managers, or team leaders and users.
