The influence of mental, emotional and social factors can be positive or negative. The approaches used to develop performance are specific to the factor and the activity.

Approaches to develop physical factors

The physical factor relates to the development of an area of fitness, an improvement in a skill or a development of a tactic.

Interval training

This involves alternating between periods of hard exercise and rest. For example, working for a set time/distance and then resting for a set time/distance. Interval training can be made harder by increasing the intensity or period of work, or by decreasing the rest period. It can improve speed, muscular endurance or power with a large work to rest ratio (\(1:4\)). It can also improve CRE with a shorter work to rest ratio (\(1:1\)) but over a longer period of time.

Gradual build-up

This is when skills are learned progressively. It breaks down complex or dangerous skills into easier steps/stages. Each part of the skill is introduced, practised and mastered before a new part is introduced. The complexity of the skill can therefore be gradually increased. The performer can progress up a stage when ready and can move back a stage at any time.
