Holywell

Holywell is a place of pilgrimage in Flintshire, north Wales and is linked to the legend of St Winifride.

The legend goes that Winifride wanted to become a nun, but her suitor, Caradog, was not happy about this so he beheaded her. Where her head hit the ground a spring erupted. Winifride was then brought back to life by her uncle St Beuno and lived as a nun until her death 22 years later.

She is recognised by the Catholic Church as a saint due to her life and witness as a nun, rather than the legend.

Since the 12th century some people have believed that the well has healing properties and it is a popular place of pilgrimage for Christians today.
