Scottish society in the 1540s was one dominated by the Church. Henry VIII sought to exert control over Scotland during this period. The violence during this period is known as the 'Rough Wooing'.
The 1500s saw religious changes that had a significant impact on Scotland - the Reformation in Europe and the divorce of Henry VIII.

Martin Luther, a German monk, protested about practices within the Catholic Church.
This protest movement spread throughout Europe, with its supporters being known as Protestants. The movement as a whole was known as the Reformation.

Catholic King, Henry VIII wanted to marry Anne Boleyn, but was married to Catherine of Aragon.In order for him to remarry he would have to break from the Catholic traditions on marriage. This caused great controversy at the time, and major changes to the Church in Scotland and England.
In 1533, Henry VIII broke with the Church and married the now pregnant Anne Boleyn in a secret ceremony. As a result, he was excommunicateOfficially expel someone from the Church and stop them taking part in the services of the Church. by the Pope.
The Act of Supremacy was passed in England in 1534 making King Henry VIII the supreme head of the Church in England.
