What you'll need to demonstrate

Your portfolio will need to demonstrate evidence of skills and knowledge of design processes.

Analysing a design brief

It is important that you can demonstrate your ability to identify key research issues from design problems and interpret that into valid research data to inform specification points for a design solution.

Carry out research based on a design brief: -

  • demonstrate your skills to effectively research areas related to design brief
  • effectively show a range of appropriate issues researched from a design brief
  • apply an effective use of research techniques to create a design specification

Incorporate research findings into a design specification: -

  • demonstrate the skill to create a detailed specification to a design brief
  • create a specification that contains a range of points gained from research

Generating ideas

It is important that you can demonstrate the generation of your ideas through idea generation techniques. Sketches and diagrams should be annotated with information clearly relating to aspects of the specification. All ideas should be original work.

Ideas generation: -

  • show effective skill in idea generation
  • ideas are clearly centred on the specification created
  • demonstrate an effective range of ideas
  • ideas will show creativity
  • ideas show clear differences between them

Annotation of ideas: -

  • decide when to include annotation within your ideas
  • decide what to include in your annotation
  • use vocabulary from course specification and knowledge of design and manufacture

Use of modelling

It is important that you can demonstrate a range of modelling techniques. Your models should have a purpose in the refinement of your ideas and shouldn't duplicate the same information as already demonstrated by your sketches.

Apply modelling techniques to develop a design proposal: -

  • use modelling to help generate ideas
  • use modelling to test and evaluate
  • use modelling to resolve design or manufacturing issues
  • use modelling to communicate the design proposal

Use of graphics

It is important that you can demonstrate a range of different sketching techniques. Your sketches should be varied and should have a purpose in the refinement of your ideas.

Explore ideas to build a design proposal: -

  • use graphics to communicate ideas

Refining ideas to build a design proposal: -

  • use graphics to explore and refine your ideas

Apply knowledge and understanding of design principles: -

  • use graphics to communicate details of relevant design issues of the design proposal

Apply knowledge and understanding of materials and manufacturing processes and techniques: -

  • use graphics to communicate details of the materials and the manufacturing processes to be used
