Discuss vs justify vs evaluate

Discuss

Discuss questions (6 marks) only appear in Section A and therefore do not require any application.

Discuss requires considering the benefits and/or drawbacks of the concept identified in the question. Answers are assessed based on level of understanding as well as how much analysis is included in the answer. Answers need to demonstrate five logically linked strands spread out across either one or two points.

Examples of discuss questions include:

Question

Discuss the impact on an entrepreneur of creating a business plan.

Question

Discuss the importance of giving employees permanent contracts.

Question

Discuss the impact of barriers to international trade.

Justify

Justify questions (9 marks) require focussing on one of the options given and considering the pros and cons of that option, and then coming to a conclusion that adds extra evaluation that hasn’t repeated the same points as before. This essentially means stating which option is best and why.

These questions always require application throughout the answer to the case study given. For a top level answer, finish the conclusion with an ‘it depends on’ factor. It is important not to consider both options.

Examples of justify questions include:

Question

Yanna’s Bikes is considering two options to expand the business. Justify which one of these options Yanna’s Bikes should choose:

opening more shops

opening an e-commerce store

Question

Mate’s Bakery is considering two options to improve the business’ productivity. Justify which one of these options Mate’s Bakery should choose:

moving towards a flatter organisational structure

moving towards a taller organisational structure

Evaluate

Evaluate questions (12 marks) are designed to be challenging and are the top-level skills assessed in GCSE Business. These questions require demonstrating knowledge of the concept given in the case study, applying the points to the given business, and developing the answer to discuss the impact/consequence before making a conclusion. Using the ‘it depends on’ factor will finish off the conclusion.

Examples of evaluate questions include:

  • Evaluate whether a bank loan would be an effective source of finance for Dafydd’s Florist.
  • Evaluate whether Mate’s Bakery would benefit from a move from being a LTD company to a PLC.
  • Evaluate whether promotion is the most effective element of the marketing mix for Sarma’s Café.

An example question and answer:
