The is the most important prayer in Judaism. It is the Jewish expression of belief in one God and it teaches how Jews should respect God. It opens with the words:

Hear O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

The Shema consists of three passages made up of verses from Numbers and Deuteronomy, the fourth and fifth books of the . Prayer is one of the ways that Jews can experience God’s presence so many Jewish people try to recite the Shema twice a day.
