Parallel lines
Watch this video to understand the angles made by parallel lines.
Angles made by parallel lines
parallelStraight lines are parallel if they are always the same distance apart. Parallel lines never meet, no matter how far they are extended. lines are straight lines which have the same direction and so never meet. Parallel lines are marked with an arrow as shown below.
In diagrams, parallel lines can form:
- corresponding angles
- alternate angles
Corresponding angles
These are sometimes known as 'F' angles.
The diagram below shows parallel lines being intersected by another line.
The two angles marked in this diagram are called corresponding anglesCorresponding angles form an "F-shape". Corresponding angles are equal to each other. and are equal to each other.
The two angles marked in each diagram below are called alternate anglesAlternate angles form a "Z-shape". Alternate angles are equal to each other. or Z angles. They are equal.
Vertically opposite angles
Vertically opposite angles are so called because they are opposite each other at a vertex.
The two angles marked in each of these diagrams are called vertically opposite anglesA pair of opposite angles that is formed by intersecting lines. and are equal.
