Catholic responses to creation

The Catholic Church teaches that:

  • God is the creator and that he is the giver of life
  • God gave humans over the Earth
  • humanity has ownership over the Earth but this does not give humans the right to act and do as they want
  • humans are the of God’s creation
  • humans are not here to use the Earth, but rather to be caretakers for future generations

The Church teaches that it is that it is the duty of Catholics to look after the world that God has provided. St Francis of Assisi invites Catholics to see nature as a magnificent book in which God speaks to us and grants humans a glimpse of his infinite beauty and goodness.

In Matthew 6:25-34, people are told not to worry about what they need to eat, drink or wear. This is because God provides everything that human beings need, just as he does all the living things on Earth.
