As with wood and metal, plastics can undergo processes to achieve a desired finish. Abrasives such as emery cloth, silicon carbide paper, or steel wool are used to remove blemishes or marks before a polish is applied and the plastic is buffed to a good finish.

Unlike with woods and metals, many plastic goods are produced with their final finish. Plastics can be moulded to have a certain texture or finish. These types of product usually do not require further finishing
