Paper One lasts for 1 hour and 45 minutes. It is an essay-based paper with two essays each worth 20 marks and one essay worth 12 marks.

The paper is divided into three sections.

• Section One – Democracy in Scotland and the United Kingdom
• Section Two – Social Issues in the United Kingdom
• Section Three – International Issues

In each section there will be a choice of essays. You must write one essay for each section.
