Tips for healthy eating

In addition to the Eatwell Guide, the government has created eight tips for healthy eating. These provide clear advice on how we can achieve a healthy, balanced diet.

It is hoped that if people follow the healthy eating advice outlined in the Eatwell Guide and the eight tips for healthy eating, diet-related health problems – such as , , tooth decay (or dental caries) and – will reduce.

The eight tips are:

  1. Base your meals on starchy foods
  2. Eat lots of fruit and vegetables
  3. Eat more fish – including a portion of oily fish each week
  4. Cut down on and sugar
  5. Eat less salt – no more than 6g a day for adults
  6. Get active and try to be a healthy weight
  7. Don't get thirsty
  8. Don't skip breakfast
