Group 1 - the alkali metals - EdexcelPhysical properties of the alkali metals

The group 1 elements are all soft, reactive metals with low melting points. They react with water to produce an alkaline metal hydroxide solution and hydrogen. Reactivity increases down the group.

Physical properties

The alkali metals:

  • are soft (they can be cut with a knife)
  • have relatively low

The alkali metals also have low . They are low enough for the first three (lithium, sodium and potassium) to float on water.

Example

The table shows the melting points of five alkali metals. Use this information to describe how the melting point changes in group 1.

ElementMelting point
Lithium, Li180°C
Sodium, Na98°C
Potassium, K63°C
Rubidium, Rb39°C
Caesium, Cs28°C
ElementLithium, Li
Melting point180°C
ElementSodium, Na
Melting point98°C
ElementPotassium, K
Melting point63°C
ElementRubidium, Rb
Melting point39°C
ElementCaesium, Cs
Melting point28°C

Going down group 1, the melting point decreases.
