The use of machines and hand tools are generally to remove material for shaping and forming or connecting.

Each machine has a different set of safety rules for them which she be clearly indicated on or close to the machine. These are generally about Personal Protective Equipment that should be used such as goggles, gloves, and aprons.

You should always make sure that you attire is appropriate. When in the workshop make sure you have sensible shoes as there could be falling hazards and you maybe dealing with heavy objects that could fall.

Ensure that you have no loose clothing or loose hair as there are many machines an objects that could catch you clothing. Wearing a apron can help reduce this risk and avoid wearing scarfs and hoodies.

Safety using machine tools

Only ever use a machine that you have been shown to use by your teachers and always inform your teacher if you attend to use a machine before you use it.

When using machines look at the required safety actions signs for that machine – they should be on the machine or on a wall nearby.

Most machines will have a guard/s to protect you from a cutting surface or rotational part of the machine. You will be required to ensure that you have no loose clothing or jewellery and to be vigilant when you or someone else is using a machine.

You should always check the machines settings and for any damage as this will effect the performance of the machine.
