Symmetry in quadrilaterals

A quadrilateral is a 2D shape with four sides.

Different types of quadrilateral have different numbers of lines of symmetry.

Square

A square has:

  • four equal sides
  • four equal angles of 90°
  • opposite sides are parallel
  • four lines of symmetry

Rectangle

  • two pairs of equal sides

Parallelogram

A kite has:

Trapezium

A trapezium has:

  • A trapezium has one pair of parallel sides.
  • Some trapeziums have one line of symmetry. They are called isosceles trapeziums as they have two equal sides like isosceles triangles.
