Bonding - (CCEA)Forming negative and positive ions - Higher tier
Atoms and ions bond with each other in two main ways – ionic bonds or covalent bonds. When these bonds are formed the atoms achieve a full outer shell of electrons and become stable.
Atoms gain electrons in their outer shell when they form negative ions, called anionA negative ion.. These ions are negative because they contain more electrons than protons.
Figure caption,
An oxygen atom gains two electrons to form an oxide anion.
Forming positive ions (cations)
Atoms lose electrons from their outer shell when they form positive ions, called cation A positive ion. . These ions are positive because they contain more protons than electrons.
Figure caption,
A sodium atom loses one electron to form a sodium cation.
