A demonstrative pronoun is used when the words ‘this’ or ‘that’ are not followed by a noun.

So rather than saying ‘this skirt’ or ‘this book’ – which are specific, you would say ‘this one’ or ‘that one’ to demonstrate which one you were talking about.
